SAANEN
Origin and diffusion
Originally from Switzerland, these goats are now reared in many European and non-European countries. This breed is suitable for intensive rearing in stables or partial grazing. It is the most widespread breed in Europe.
Main breeding areas in Italy: Apulia, Piedmont, Lombardy, Emilia-Romagna, Tuscany and Lazio. The Herd Book was established in Italy in 1973. Aptitude for milk production.
It is one of the seven goat breeds officially recognised in Switzerland (Appenzell, Chamois Coloured Goat, Saanen, Grisons Striped, Toggenburg, Valais Blackneck and Verzaschese).

Morphological and productive characteristics
Size: medium to large.
Head: small, light and narrow, both male and female goats may have horns. Straight profile with beard, especially in males. Long neck, with or without tassels.
Body: ample chest and abdomen. Ample, well-developed teats; medium-developed, straight, conical and vertical nipples. Long, well-proportioned limbs.
Average height at the withers:
– Adult males 87 cm
– Adult females 74 cm
Average weight:
– Adult males 90 kg
– Adult females 60 kg

MURCIA-GRANADA GOAT
Origin and diffusion
The Murcia-Granada goat is a breed found mainly in the provinces of Granada, Murcia and Albacete. It descends from the Capra aegagrus, whose secondary form is the Pyrenean ibex which, over the years, evolved into the current Murcia-Granada breed.
There are about 508,000 animals in the herd book, found in nine regions: Murcia, Andalusia, Valencia, Castilla-La Mancha, Extremadura, Madrid, Castile and León, Aragon and Catalonia

The Murcia-Granada breed produces milk that is ideal for processing.
CHAMOIS COLOURED GOAT
Origin and diffusion
Originally from Switzerland, this goat is reared in many European countries (in particular in France and Germany) and non-European countries. In Italy, it is reared in the Alpine regions, especially in Piedmont and Trentino-Alto Adige. The Herd Book was started in Italy in 1973. It is so called because its coat resembles that of a chamois.
It is one of the seven goat breeds officially recognised in Switzerland (Appenzell, Chamois Coloured Goat, Saanen, Grisons Striped, Toggenburg, Valais Blackneck and Verzaschese). Modest feeding requirements, sturdy and strong, it adapts to the most diverse situations. Good-natured and affectionate. Excellent milk producer.

Morphological and productive characteristics
Size: medium to large.
Head: relatively small, light and narrow, males bearded. Ears: long, oblique and slanted forward, never hanging.
Body: ample chest and abdomen, pointed teats and well-developed nipples.
Coat: tawny with a variety of shades, short hair, with black stripe along the back. Black extremities and dew claws, characteristic muzzle.
Skin: thin, pigmented in black.
Height at the withers: Adult males 86 cm – Adult females 74 cm
Average weight: Adult males 100 kg – Adult females 70 kg
Averagemilk production: primiparous 324 litres – pluriparous 507 litres
Fertility: 95%
Average weight of kids at birth 3.5 kg, at 60 days 12.5 kg.
